English Language

The English Department recognises that if students are to participate in today's society and workplace, they will need to use English skillfully and confidently. As students move through the years, they will be required to use English with greater fluency, proficiency, and accuracy in a broadening range of situations.

The principal aim of the English Department is to provide a positive learning environment in which students enjoy learning English. The general aims are to develop the students' imagination and creativity, to have them think analytically and critically. A variety of resources, novels, texts, and media are used to help students appreciate cultural diversity, and to communicate clearly, concisely and accurately.

In Years 7-9, students learn English for the purpose of improving their language communication, as well as fostering and inculcating an interest in appreciating English literature, language and culture. The year is divided into six modules. The reading, writing, listening and speaking skills are taught using a variety of activities from a selection of novels, short stories, poetry, dramas and related language texts. A variety of assessments for each of the skills are used at the end of each unit.

In IGCSE, students study either First Language English or Second Language English.

In IB, students choose from English A1, English A2 or English B.
