Mathematics

The key to understanding the way the universe operates is a mathematical one. It's the basics of understanding science and is the prerequisite course for a number of disciplines of study at college and university.

Because of its importance, Mathematics is a compulsory subject for students in Yew Chung International School (YCIS). The emphasis in this curriculum is positive education whereby assessment aims to find out what students know rather than what they do not know. It is important for students to enjoy the experience of learning Mathematics and that they find it a satisfying pursuit.

The broad aims of the Mathematics Department are:

  • Develop the process of enquiry in which students develop a systematic method for exploring new problems or unfamiliar situations;
  • Equip students with sufficient understanding, knowledge and skills so that they can cope successfully with mathematical problems that may arise in daily life and in other subjects;
  • Instil a sense of perseverance in the students so that they become more independent and persistent in the pursuit of solving problems;
  • Learn the process of mathematical modeling by which students take the conditions of a real situation and describe them in mathematical form. The primary goal of Year 7 is to understand mathematical concepts; in Year 8 it is to communicate mathematics; in Year 9 it is on solving problems using a variety of methods.

In IGCSE, all students must study Mathematics; students may also study Additional Mathematics as an elective.

In IB, students choose from Mathematics HL, Mathematics SL or Mathematical Studies.
