The Science Department aims to offer our students a well-rounded experience of both physical and life science, providing an understanding of scientific methodology, diverse subject knowledge and a good grounding in laboratory skills.
Subject specialisation is possible as students progress through the school. We seek to develop our students' intellectual curiosity about the world around them, to give them sound study skills and hence to equip them for the demands of a university education.
At Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9), students follow a programme of study based on the National Curriculum for England. We use the well-known Spotlight Science series of textbooks to deliver the course, which is spiral and modular in nature. Students study about eight topics per year and their knowledge and process skills are assessed by means of short written tests at the end of each topic. Students' practical skills are assessed by means of laboratory investigations throughout the course. At the end of each year, a terminal exam is used to assess students' attainment in Science for that year.
In IGCSE, students may study Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics.
In IB, students may study one or two Sciences from Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Environmental Systems and Societies.
