The Music Department aims to immerse students in a holistic educational programme of study that broadens the mind and promotes awareness of a diverse range of cultural styles. Students are constantly encouraged to perform, compose and listen to music both inside and outside of lessons.
Regular opportunities are created for students to share their talent within school and to a wider audience through school concerts and other related events. Through a broad-ranging curriculum that covers the entire school and through a lively co-curricular programme, all students can expect to make a significant contribution to the musical life of the school.
Music is compulsory for students in Years 7–9. They will attend two lessons of each cycle. The curriculum is broadly based on the National Curriculum for England as well as the Hong Kong syllabus for Music. Through the study of the elements of music students learn to perform, compose and listen to music. They are taught basic compositional techniques through the use of traditional staff notation. They will study a broad range of music from the traditional Western “art music” of the great composers to music from different regions of the world, including jazz.
