    • This month parents and staff were treated to a full musical production of an adapted, rather humourous, version of the tales of Robin Hood.

The first discussions of such took place more than a year ago, initiated by Primary teacher and director of the musical, Fraser McPhie. He expressed his complete satisfaction in guiding the children from their auditions through to the live performances of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies.

Children from Years 4 to Year 6 were the cast and choir, with more than sixty students involved. The stage is the perfect platform to encourage children to feel inspired, share their creative processes and develop their confidence in delivering a performance.

The script, predominantly in English, was interspersed with some Chinese. The lines delivered by the children were ‘punchy’ and witty with a great deal of ‘play on words’ and coincidental double meanings, adding to the audience’s entertainment. Balanced with the “slap-stick” fun side were outstanding vocals. The singing showcased both solos and well balanced group performances.

Stage and performance also requires set design, props and costumes. Sara Barati, Artist-in-Residence, ran an after school club for those wishing to be involved in backdrop painting and prop making. Full size props, such as King John’s throne and the “squisher” machine sought great construction and patience. The children were engaged from the outset, in creating the scale model to help them visualise and plan.

With a production of this scale comes the enormous support of the participating children’s parents and the teachers volunteering their out-of-class time. Our thanks to all involved and we look forward to more in the future.
