    • As part of YCIS's extended curriculum, World Classroom takes learning beyond borders. Students engage in academic exploration, service projects, and cultural exchange during overseas trips, deepening their global perspective.

Our Year 10 & 11 students embarked on an incredible Experiential Learning Week in remote Bau Bau, working with marine biologists from Operation Wallacea under Ms Stephanie Visser, Marine Science teacher. Located in the biodiverse Coral Triangle, this immersive programme brought theories to life through hands-on marine conservation.

Each day began with energising local breakfasts before snorkelling sessions where students documented coral health and observed traditional fishing. Fish market visits became interactive classrooms, practising fish ID and learning about livelihoods. Evenings featured lectures linking observations to environmental challenges.

Beyond academics, the trip fostered unforgettable cultural exchanges — an impromptu football match against local fishermen had everyone laughing and cheering. These moments revealed the vibrant community behind conservation efforts.

Year 10 student Riya Bhatt shared, "I learnt about the struggles of people who live there. Overfishing and dynamite fishing are common, but these fishermen rely on this ecosystem for income and lifestyle because they aren't as fortunate as those with vast land resources. Marine ecosystems benefit us more than we realise, and we should take responsibility to protect our oceans."

This journey through Indonesia's marine wonders didn't just teach conservation — it showed why it matters. Students returned with deeper ecological understanding, cherished memories, and renewed motivation to protect our blue planet.
