For decades, YCYW has received widespread recognition from many internationally renowned institutions for the outstanding quality of the education it offers and the achievements of its students. We are delighted to announce that the YCYW Spring University Fair started on 4 March at YWIES Yantai.
The university fair will include activities at five YCYW schools: YWIES Yantai, YCIS Qingdao, YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang, YCIS Shanghai, and YWIES Shanghai Lingang. Through the fair, students and parents will have the opportunity to communicate directly with university admissions officers face-to-face. They will also be able to learn about the latest information on admissions and the requirements for acceptance. This will help students better prepare their applications for further education.
The YCYW Spring University Fair brings together renowned institutions from around the world. Since its launch at YWIES Yantai on 4 March, the event has visited four schools: YWIES Yantai, YCIS Qingdao, YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang, and YCIS Shanghai.
Each stop of the event has attracted enthusiastic participation from many students and parents. The participants were able to talk directly with admissions officers from prestigious universities in countries and regions such as the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong SAR. They thus gained an understanding of the latest admission policies and requirements. In mid-March, the YCYW Spring University Fair will visit the two final schools—YWIES Shanghai Lingang and YWIES Guangzhou.
Mr John Liu, Head of Careers and University Guidance and Student Development at YCYW, remarked, "The fair has not only served as a platform for students to connect with potential universities, but has also fostered a sense of community among families eager to support their children's academic journeys. The enthusiasm was palpable, as attendees engaged in discussions about their aspirations and dreams."
Mr William Kim, the Careers and University Guidance Counsellor (CUGC) at YCIS Qingdao, noted how the fair has been of special importance for particular students: "For our Year 11 students, the fair offered a timely opportunity to begin considering their future academic directions. Engaging with university representatives allowed them to gather essential information that will guide their International Baccalaureate (IB) subject choices, thereby aligning their academic preparation with their goals for higher education."
For Grade 12 students, who will soon apply to universities, the fair has served as a "real-life drill." "Participating in specialised workshops has enabled students to grasp the distinctions between various application requirements, such as the UK personal statement versus the US Common Application essay. This practical insight will be particularly beneficial as they approach the critical period of submitting university applications, and will thus boost their confidence," Mr Kim added.
The University Fair was very successful at its first stop, YWIES Yantai. Ms Marlize Van Zyl, the school's CUGC, said, "It was especially helpful for our year 8 and year 11 students because having face-to-face conversations with the university representatives further guided the students in their subject choices for IGCSE [International General Certificate of Secondary Education] and AS [Advanced Subsidiary] level courses. The fair created a buzz, especially in these year groups, because the students experienced a very real look into their futures, and all the possibilities the fair unlocked."
She also noted one trend in particular: "Many students enquired about careers in fields such as game design and coding, and about pilot training programmes. This led to productive discussions with parents that allowed them to think openly about alternative careers for students. We believe the fair encouraged open communication between the CUGO counsellors, parents, and students that helped to shape shared goals from the very beginning."
The fair at YCIS Shanghai brought together representatives from more than 90 universities, and attracted a total of more than 400 parents and students from Yew Chung and Yew Wah schools in Shanghai. They talked face-to-face with the admissions officers and explored academic pathways and details about the universities.
Ms Alison Hung, the CUGC at YCIS Shanghai, commented: "Seeking information online about a university is not comparable to meeting a university representative and getting first hand information in person. We encourage students and parents to seek accurate information to empower them to make informed decisions. Universities also like to see students who are genuinely interested in their universities and want to know more in depth information during the research process, so that one day they will get students who are excited to attend the university."
