Organised by the Graduate School of Education at Peking University, a delegation of primary and secondary school principals and education research leaders from cities including Shenzhen, Changsha, Chongqing, and Xi'an recently visited the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network. The exchange was designed to spark deep, future-oriented conversations around technology education and school leadership. As a major highlight of the visit, YCIS Hong Kong offered a comprehensive look at the complete pathway of innovative education, from its early childhood programme rooted in the Yew Chung Approach to its primary and secondary years.

    • YCCECE - Exploring Child Development from aHigher Education Perspective

The delegation began their visit at Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE), the higher education institution within the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network. The College introduced its practices in curriculum design, the creation of a multicultural learning environment, and the training of future early childhood educators. Delegates toured Pamela Peck Discovery Space (PPDS) – Hong Kong's first interactive discovery space designed for children aged 0 – 8 and their caregivers. The space embodies learning through play while also serving as a "teaching and learning laboratory" where students gain hands-on experience.

During the visit, the delegation observed and discussed child-centred education, focusing on child development and teaching practices. Delegates were particularly interested in how the College translates child development research into a replicable and scalable educational model that integrates smoothly with primary education.

    • YCIS Hong Kong – A Full View of the Curriculum and Distinctive Features

The delegation then proceeded to the secondary section of YCIS Hong Kong, where Ms Shannon Shang, Regional Executive Principal, guided the tour. Ms Shang began by presenting our curriculum framework and the bilingual education model. Delegates learnt that YCIS offers a coherent educational pathway from the 0–8 education model through to Secondary level, with a strong emphasis on children's agency, relationships, inquiry-based learning, and global citizenship.

In bilingual education, YCIS enhances students' Chinese and English proficiency through three interconnected aspects: learning language, learning through language, and learning about language. All teachers are language teachers, and Chinese and Western teachers collaborate through curriculum mapping and joint lesson planning. YCIS has also developed the world's first adaptive Chinese language proficiency assessment system, tailored to students at different proficiency levels.

In addition, Ms Shang also highlighted the Seeds for Tomorrow programme. Developed through close partnerships with top universities and industry organisations, the initiative extends learning beyond the traditional classroom, engaging students in project-based work that tackles real-world challenges and equips them for the future. The school shared several compelling examples, including an advanced marine science and engineering camp, a research programme at the Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research (OSCAR), and the ChinaOne experiential learning project.

    • Deep Integration of Technology Education and Innovative Practice

Following the curriculum presentation, Ms Shang led the delegation on a tour of several signature learning spaces, giving them a direct look at how YCIS brings its educational philosophy to life in daily teaching:

      • Global Learning Centre: Showcasing cross-cultural learning resources and global citizenship education, reflecting YCIS's commitment to nurturing international perspectives.

      • Open Learning Spaces: Flexible layouts that support concept-based learning, collaborative inquiry, and self-directed learning, breaking the boundaries of traditional classrooms.

      • InnoHub: A dedicated space where students can engage with future technologies. Equipped with advanced tools and equipment, it encourages hands-on exploration, risk-taking, and innovation, building technology literacy and practical skills for the future.

      • Design & Technology space: Featuring professional tools and equipment that support the full process from design thinking to physical creation, including areas such as graphics and resistant materials.

      • Visual Arts space: Highlighting interdisciplinary arts education and creative expression, showcasing a range of student work from performance to visual arts.

Looking to the Future: Mutual Learning and Expanding Collaboration

From YCCECE to YCIS Hong Kong, the delegation gained a systematic view of how the Yew Chung Yew Wah network has built an integrated educational model grounded in an East-meets-West philosophy. Drawing on their own experiences in mainland schools, delegates engaged with the YCIS team in meaningful dialogue on curriculum innovation and the future direction of schooling.

This exchange was not only a dialogue across ECE, primary/secondary, and tertiary education but also a meaningful meeting of Hong Kong and mainland perspectives, opening up broad possibilities for collaboration in research, teacher development, and curriculum co-creation. As artificial intelligence advances rapidly and global education continues to evolve, Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network remains committed to its Eastern-Western philosophy and looks forward to working alongside fellow educators to shape the future of education.
